Aim

Through this programme, deaf school principals from China, from a wide variety of perspectives, will understand the services available in Hong Kong for managing children with hearing impairment. Participants will investigate medical, audiological, speech and language rehabilitation and educational aspects. It is expected that visitors will gain insights into implementing new programs in their schools in Mainland China for improving the quality and outcome of their services.

Program content

The 3-week visiting program consists of observation, discussion tutorials, and written assignment. Experienced tutor will walk through medical, audiology, speech and language and deaf education aspects with visitors.

Observation
The content and time allocation for observation and discussion are as follows:

Speech and language assessment procedures for hearing impaired children; speech and language therapy for children using hearing aids and/ or cochlear implants; different aural rehabilitation procedures
Education Student intake procedures; curriculum arrangement; teacher training; class size; group and individual training arrangement; aural habilitation philosophies; use of group amplification devices such as FM systems
The range of in-house audiological services and aural rehabilitation services provided by the Education and Manpower Bureau; the consultation role of the Education and Manpower Bureau in mainstreaming children with hearing impairment
Assignment

Observation log
Each visitor is required to write a log recording each observation, listing the new pieces of information received. The recording will include a comparison between the services offered in their hometown or in China in general, and the services they observed in the program. A recording template will be available for recording the observation.

Program plan
Based on the knowledge acquired, each visitor will write a six- to twelve- month plan for implementing a new program in their school, based on their learning during the visiting program. He/She will present his/her plan to a certification panel.
