The aim of this webinar is to introduce different functions of the ‘Oroeasy’ mobile app and give demonstration on how to use it. CUHK Oroeasy app provides a convenient way for the speech therapists to tailor make suitable oral motor training programmes for their patients, and keep track on the compliance of the patients in performing the exercises.
World Hearing Day

The theme of World Hearing Day in 2021 is “Hearing Care for All”. A hearing test challenge was launched at Facebook and Instagram to raise public awareness on noise-induced hearing loss and remind them the ways on maintaining good hearing health. A poster and two videos were spread through healthcare related Facebook pages and KOLs and reached 20K Facebook users.
Webinar on “Hearing loss, communication deficit, and cognitive decline in elderly: What does the research tell us?”

Hearing loss has often been referred to as an “invisible disability”, not just because of the lack of visible symptoms, but because it has long been stigmatised in communities. Unaddressed hearing loss is the third largest cause of years lived with disability globally. Recent meta-analysis suggested that hearing loss can almost double the risk of dementia (relative risk = 1.9 times) among older adults. This was a webinar to enhance the continuing professional development of local audiologists in managing the hearing loss and thus the communication difficulties and cognitive decline among older adults. Close to half of the local practicing audiologists participated in this webinar.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong ENT Conference 2020

This was a regional platform introducing and keeping ENT surgeons, speech therapists, audiologists, nursing
professionals abreast of technology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment in the digital era. Panels of world
and local experts shared their enlightening experiences in otorhinolaryngology and related sciences.
This year, it was live broadcasting via Zoom and WeChat due to the outbreak of COVID-19. There were over
2.5 thousands views on Zoom as well as 10 thousands on WeChat.

the Elderly (RCHE)”

Dysphagia management is probably the major but potentially risky role that a speech therapist plays in the
residential care homes for the elderly (RCHE). Assessing and managing dysphagia is challenging because of the
various limitations.
The webinar specifically enhanced over 70 participants’ knowledge in dysphagia management and in
particular, the tools and skills speech therapists need to survive in a RCHE environment.
Webinar on “Perceptual Assessment of Speech and Velopharyngeal Dysfunction in Cleft Lip and Palate – Using the Cantonese-Cleft Speech Assessment Tool (C-CSAT: Yiu, Chan, Choi & Pereira, 2019)”

Cantonese has a unique phonological system where its consonants, vowels and syllabic structure that are different to other languages. Following the success last year, the Institute of Human Communicative Research and the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong have jointly re-run the seminar in webinar format, to introduce the Cantonese-Cleft Speech Assessment Tool (C-CSAT: Yiu, Chan, Choi & Pereira) that published in 2019.
The aim of this webinar is to educate graduating ST students how to use the tool correctly. Response has been enthusiastic, about a hundred people attended the event! More exciting events will be held in the coming future. Stay tuned!
Macau Teacher Training Project 2020

This project was jointly organized with Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Chinese University of Hong Kong and Education and Youth Affairs Bureau and Centro de Apoio Psico-Pedagogico e Ensino Especial, Macau. It aimed to increase participants’ awareness on language and communication disorders and equip them with training strategies. Participants were well trained to identify children with communicative disorders and establish teaching plans for those children. The course was mainly focus on project studies, mock exercises and case studies. It targeted teachers from primary school, secondary school, kindergarten, retired teachers, counselors and graduates of rehabilitation therapy in Macau.
Childsim Talks: The Pursuit of Happiness Stories behind the Bionic Ears

The Childsim Talk was jointly organized with Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Chinese University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Children’s Hospital. Professor Michael Tong, Director of the Institute of Human Communicative Research, shared his experience and latest development on surgery of cochlear implant. The talk was live webcasted to all HA-networked computers and simultaneously Zoomed to Fellows of the ENT and Paediatric Colleges. There were estimated 320 attendees.
Endoscopic Ear Surgery Pre-workshop Live Demonstration & 4th Advanced Endoscopic & Temporal Bone Dissection Workshop

It is a combined event of Endoscopic Ear Surgery Pre-workshop Live Demonstration and 4th Advanced Endoscopic & Temporal Bone Dissection Workshop. Endoscopic Ear Surgery Pre-workshop Live Demonstration featured live surgeries and stage discussions on endoscopic surgery from the middle ear to skull base. The 4th Advanced Endoscopic & Temporal Bone Dissection Workshop was designed for ENT specialists and trainees who want to learn updated endoscopic / microscopic approaches and refresh their knowledge of anatomy. It gathered expert surgeons in the world to share their experience and guide participants to explore advanced surgical techniques in endoscopic-microscopic ear surgery.
7th World Chinese Academy of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Conference cum 2nd Greater Bay Area Conjoint ENT Scientific Symposium

The 7th World Chinese Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Conference was held on 1 – 3 November 2019 in Macao. It was a combined meeting of 2nd Greater Bay Area Conjoint ENT Scientific Symposium, 8th Hong Kong-Macao Otorhinolaryngology Conjoint Meeting and The CUHK ENT Conference 2019. The theme knowledge exchange in medicine from research, translation to education translated promoting academic exchange, integration and development between the Mainland, Macao and the rest of the world, facilitating the development of the Big Bay Area towards a healthier healthcare blueprint. Over 400 Otorhinolaryngology clinicians, researchers, scientists, audiologists, and speech therapists from the greater bay area as well as from all over the world had participated in the 2-day scientific program.

Cantonese has a unique phonological system where its consonants, vowels and syllabic structure that are different to other languages. However, there is no speech assessment tool specifcally designed for Cantonese-speaking children with cleft lip and palate. In view of this gap in clinic practice, the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery and the Insitute of Human Communicative Research organized a seminar on ‘Perceptual Assessment of Cleft Palate Speech/ Velopharyngeal Dysfunction: An International Perspective & A Tool for Cantonese-speaking Children’ on 6 July 2019 with surgeons, specialists and speech therapists specialized in children with cleft lip and palate sharing their expertise to the participants. The seminar attracted over 170 paticipants, including speech therapists, doctors and speech therapy students. The participant not only were introduced to the newly developed speech assessment tool, they also had the opportunity to practice using the assessment tool supplemented by case studies.

The Institute of Human Communicative Research (IHCR) and the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, conducted a very successful seminar on 24th February, 2019 on dysphagia management, which is probably the major but potentially risky role that a speech therapist has in the residential care homes for the elderly (RCHE). Assessing and managing dysphagia is challenging because of the various limitations. The useful information, practical tips and case discussion in this seminar specifically enhanced participants’ knowledge in dysphagia management and in particular, the tools and skills a speech therapist needs to strive in a RCHE environment. Due to overwhelming response, the seminar was re-run on 24th March, 2019. The two identical seminars attracted over 110 speech therapists to attend.

The Institute of Human Communicative Research (IHCR) and Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery invited Dr. Anne Hill (Senior Lecturer at University of Queensland) to conduct a very successful “Professional Seminar on Clinical Education” on 26th to 27th January, 2019. In the 2-day seminar, Dr Hill provided an in-depth explanation of the clinical supervision process, her fruitful experience and useful information to the participants, so that participants could easily grasp the basic theory and practical skills of clinical education in speech therapy.
